Using a Sportsbook to Bet on NBA Basketball

Before you start betting, you need to find a reputable sportsbook. Any of the ones we recommend above are safe and easy to use. To give you a leg up, or more aptly, a layup, we’ve vetted each betting website so you don’t have to.

When we assess an online betting site, we look for the following:

  • Type of bets – What betting options are offered?
  • Bonus programs – Does the site offer free bets? Is there a first-deposit or welcome bonus available? Do you get special offers if you bet using Bitcoin?
  • User interface – Is the sportsbook easy to use? Do the graphics look cluttered on your phone or tablet or do need to use your desktop or laptop to bet?
  • Deposit and withdrawal options – Can you fund your betting account with your credit card? Can you use PayPal or other e-wallets? Is there an option to use Bitcoin? Is there a maximum deposit amount? Is there a minimum? Is withdrawing your winnings easy or does it take weeks?
  • Trustworthiness – What are customers saying about the brand? Is the site known for their great reputation or are they untrustworthy?
  • Customer service – Can you contact the site whenever you need to via chat, email or phone? Are complaints or issues handled in a timely manner?
  • Currencies – Can you bet in USD or CAD?
  • Languages – Is the site available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and other popular languages?

All you need to do is find a sportsbook you like from our list, open an account and make a deposit. It takes less than 10 minutes to create an account and once that’s done, you can move on to the fun stuff.

How to Bet on NBA Games

Having basic knowledge of basketball and sports wagering is a great start if you’re new to NBA betting. Though you don’t necessarily have to use each of the wager types listed below, it is useful to understand all the different options and methods.

Moneyline

Moneyline bets are simple because bettors must select which team they believe will win the game. Underdogs provide the most value but are less likely to win the game, according to the oddsmaker – these are the professionals that set the betting lines. Favorites are not as lucrative as underdogs but have a better chance to win in the eyes of the sportsbook.

For example, if the odds of a moneyline wager feature the Miami Heat at +150 and the Boston Celtics at -120, the Celtics are favored to win. Favorites are represented with a plus sign (-), while underdogs are represented with a minus sign (+).

If you were to wager $120 on Boston and they won, you’d win $100 and get a nice payout of $220. Since the Heat are considered the underdog in this case, a $120 wager will result in a $300 payout if they beat the Celtics – your original $120 would be returned and you’d collect $180 for the Heat’s win.

Point Spread

Much like the NFL, a large percentage of those who enjoy betting on basketball use point spreads.

For instance, if a game has a spread of +3.5 for the Los Angeles Lakers and -3.5 for the San Antonio Spurs, the Spurs are favored by 3.5 points. The Lakers, on the other hand, are 3.5-point underdogs.

Essentially, the Lakers are spotted 3.5 points before the game even starts since they’re considered the weaker team in the game – time to activate “Playoff LeBron”! For those betting on the Spurs, they will have to win by four or more points to cover the spread. For Lakers bettors to win, LA has to either win the game outright or lose by three points or less otherwise covering the spread won’t happen.

Totals (OVER/UNDER)

Betting totals is another extremely popular option for basketball wagering. The oddsmakers will select a total number based on how they think the game will pan out. Totals vary depending on the matchup, and due to the rise in scoring in the NBA over recent seasons, OVER/UNDER numbers seem to be getting consistently higher every year.

To bet on NBA totals, you have to choose if you think the total number of points in the game will be OVER or UNDER the oddsmaker’s selected number.

Let’s say the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls are facing off and the total set by the oddsmakers is 196. If you bet the UNDER, you think the total score will be less than 196 points. If you bet the OVER, you think that collectively Chicago an Indiana are going to score more than 196 points. If the score lands on 196 exactly, that’s a PUSH and your bet is refunded as if it never happened.

Parlays

Though risky, parlay bets have seen an increase in popularity in recent years. To place a parlay wager, bettors must select a minimum of two totals, moneyline or point spread bets and combine them into one singular bet.

What makes a parlay bet risky is that all selections must win in order for the bettor to receive a payout. However, bettors who hit on parlays are rewarded with a significantly higher payout than single wagers.

Check out our Parlay Calculator to see what your potential payout will be.

Teasers

Teasers in NBA wagering are fairly similar to parlay bets in that all wagers must be correct in order to receive a payout. This type of bet allows you to adjust the point spread or totals line in your favor to minimize the associated risk. Depending on how you think the game will play out, you can adjust the lines by 4-6 points. Some online basketball betting sites will even let you go as high as 8-10 points.

It’s important to remember that there’s less risk involved with teasers. This means that your profit won’t be as high as it would be with a parlay bet, but you can still have fun betting.

Live Betting

Most sportsbooks offer live betting, also known as in-play betting, letting bettors find an edge while the game is happening.

Unlike a traditional wager before the game starts, you can place a bet while watching the game unfold. Live NBA wagering lets you place bets as the game is going on, which is great if the favorite has a slow start or if the underdog is giving their all and leading at the end of the first quarter.

Props

NBA prop bets allow you to place wagers on events that are not directly associated with the outcome of the game. Prop bets require a little creativity on your part, but can be quite profitable if you hit on a good one.

Some great examples of prop bets would be a team’s total number of rebounds or an individual player’s OVER/UNDER of projected points. An example of a prop bet would be: Will Bill Russell score more than 13.5 total points in his next game against the Knicks? Of course, you would need a time machine to place that bet, but you get the idea.

Props can involve the whole team or individual players, and are incredibly popular during the Finals.

Futures

Futures are bets on an outcome that will happen at a later date. A common futures bet for the NBA would be predicting which team is going to win the championship. You can make a futures bet before, during or after the regular season. Generally, the further away the specific event is, the higher the potential payouts are.

A bet on the Raptors at the beginning of the regular season will feature significantly higher odds than, say, a wager on Toronto in the middle rounds of the playoffs.
